The Path: Cape Cod Rail Trail, Massachusetts

Why it's worth a visit: Cape Cod isn't just for summers—the region is also a great place to admire autumn leaves along its epic bike trail. The path, which follows a former railroad line, is predominantly paved, which makes for an easier ride. Offshoots include treks to beaches, marshes, and forests.

The Path: Shenandoah Valley, Virginia
Best time to visit: Mid-October
Why it's worth a visit: One of Virginia's most well-known bike paths lies in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, making it a must-hit cycling destination especially in the fall—so much so that there's even an event dedicated to biking among the golden leaves. The Shenandoah Fall Foliage Bike Festival, which takes place October 14 through 16, features routes suitable for hardcore riders as well as fun and easy family paths.

The Path: Kebler Pass, Colorado
Best time to
visit: October
Why it's worth
a visit: The Northeast isn't the only place in the country to witness the
changing colors of the leaves. Out in the Centennial State, there's Kebler Pass, where cyclists can gaze at the magnificent aspen trees, as their leaves turn
to a brilliant gold color amongst the West Elk Mountains. This specific trail
follows a railroad path as well, but this time, the surface varies between
gravel and paved conditions. Be aware that the path is closed starting in
November for the winter season.

The Path: Ohio to Erie Trail
Best time to
visit: Mid-October to early November
Why it's worth
a visit: Take the scenic route through Ohio with this bike path, routing
through the state's big "C" cities: Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland. It
tends to go off-road, so you don't have to worry about any traffic jams along the way.
You can pick and choose your starting points while trekking through charming small towns.

The Path: Great Allegheny Passage, Multi-State
Best time to
visit: September to early October
Why it's worth
a visit: The massive 150 mile trail spans Pennsylvania, Maryland, West
Virginia, and Virginia, using former railroad courses between the states. Stop
into the various small towns along the way, especially Confluence, Pennsylvania during its annual Pumpkinfest. Make sure to ride through the Pinkerton High Bridge in
Pennsylvania, which offers great vistas of the forest below.

The Path: Virginia Creeper Trail, Virginia
Best time to
visit: Mid-October
Why it's worth
a visit: Named after the train course, the Virginia Creeper is the state's most stunning
trail. The path follows the beautiful vistas and vibrant trees of the Blue Ridge
Mountains, and gives riders the chance to legally trek to open private
properties, offering colorful glimpses into rarely seen areas. In honor of its
past, there's even an old train located at Abington.

The Path: Katy Trail, Missouri
Best time to
visit: Mid-October
Why it's worth
a visit: Not to be confused with the one in Dallas, this mostly flat path
follows the Missouri River for a good chunk of the trail, offering
soothing water views. If you're game, stop into one of the many wineries along
what's known as "Missouri Weinstrasse," which is German for "wine road."

The Path: Farmington Canal Heritage Trail, Connecticut and Massachusetts
Best time to
visit: Mid-September to October
Why it's worth
a visit: There are traces of the trail's former canal past, especially in
Cheshire, Massachusetts where the home of a lock keeper (who maintained the waterway) has been restored into a museum. In the smaller state, you can make out the shape of Sleeping Giant, the sprawling high-rising park.

a visit: What makes Acadia stand out, besides the brilliant fall tree
showcase, are its series of carriage roads that set up the path. Those type of

with the state's scenery.

The Path: Walkway Over the Hudson, New York
Best time to
visit: Late September to mid-October
Why it's worth
a visit: Away from the noise of New York City, bikers can ride along the bridge
extending high over the Hudson River for picture-perfect views of the fire-hued
trees in all directions along the banks. The path connects Poughkeepsie and
Highland.
